About Modern Masters

Per Modern Masters Metallic Paint Collection Satin TDS, the satin line is a water-based acrylic with non-tarnishing metallic particles, VOC under 350 g/L, practical coverage about 208 to 320 sq ft per gallon, touch dry about 30 minutes, recoat about 30 minutes, and handle about 1 hour at 70 to 80°F and 50% RH. Opaque colors need about 2 coats, semi-opaque about 3, and sheer colors are translucent overcoats. Metal Effects is a different system: Bronze, Copper, and Iron paints contain real metal particles, and Blue or Green Patina Aging Solution or Rust Activator develops a genuine patina or rust finish. Venetian Plaster is a tintable acrylic plaster troweled in thin layers and burnished to a marble-like sheen.

FAQ

Are Modern Masters metallic paints water-based?

Yes. Modern Masters lists Metallic Paint Collection Satin as a water-based acrylic that cleans up with soap and water. The metallic look is non-tarnishing, unlike the Metal Effects oxidizing paints, which are designed to react and change.

What is the difference between Metallic Paint and Metal Effects?

Metallic Paint Collection gives a stable, shimmering metallic color. Metal Effects paints contain real bronze, copper, or iron particles that oxidize. Brushing a Patina Aging Solution or Rust Activator onto the wet second coat speeds that up to create a real blue or green patina or a rust finish in minutes.

Which aging solution goes with which Metal Effects paint?

Per Modern Masters, Blue Patina and Green Patina Aging Solutions are used over Oxidizing Bronze or Copper Paint, and Rust Activator is used over Oxidizing Iron Paint. Start with Metal Effects Primer, which is made to keep the acidic solutions from reaching the surface underneath.

Do I need a clear topcoat?

For Metallic Paint Collection, Modern Masters recommends MasterClear, which is made not to dull the shimmer; it says other clear coats may. Apply at least two coats. Patina finishes generally do not need a sealer unless they get frequent hand contact, and the maker calls for its own Permacoat Xtreme over Metal Effects finishes, not other sealers.

Can I roll Modern Masters metallic paint?

Yes, with Extender for Rolling. Modern Masters says to add up to 16 oz per gallon (about 4 oz per quart) to gain wet-edge time so you can back-roll in one direction and avoid lap marks.

How do I tint Venetian Plaster?

Have it tinted at a paint counter using a standard paint formula: Tint Base for whites and pastels, Ultra-Deep Tint Base for dark colors. Modern Masters says not to exceed 8 fl oz of tint per gallon and recommends sealing the wall with a primer-sealer first.

Can Texture Effects be used outside?

No. Modern Masters lists Texture Effects for interior walls and ceilings only. Once dry it does not need priming and can be painted or glazed with Modern Masters products or any water-based or alkyd paint.
