Spray Paint Tips — Get It Right the First Time

1. Surface prep is 90% of the job. Clean, dry, and scuffed. Spray paint can't fix a dirty or greasy surface. Wipe down with mineral spirits or TSP substitute before you spray.
2. Shake for a full 60 seconds after the mixing ball starts. More shaking = better atomization = smoother finish.
3. Multiple thin coats, not one thick one. Each coat should be light enough that you can still see through it while it's wet. Three thin coats dry faster and look better than one heavy coat that drips.
4. Mind the recoat window. Most Rust-Oleum sprays say recoat within 1 hour or after 48 hours. That in-between zone is when the paint is partially cured and new paint won't bond well to it.
5. Clear the nozzle. When done, flip the can upside down and spray until only clear gas comes out. Saves the nozzle for next time.
