Paint Roller Nap Guide: Choose the Right Cover Before You Start
The roller cover changes the finish
Paint can only look as good as the tool applying it. The roller nap controls how much paint the cover holds and how it lays paint onto the surface. Shop covers in painters tools and supplies and match the nap to the surface before you open the can.
Quick nap guide
- 1/4 inch: very smooth surfaces, doors, cabinets, and fine finishes.
- 3/8 inch: smooth to lightly textured walls, the everyday indoor choice.
- 1/2 inch: lightly textured walls, ceilings, and slightly rough surfaces.
- 3/4 inch and up: rough surfaces like masonry, block, stucco, and some concrete.
Do not forget the coating type
Some coatings need a specific cover. Thick coatings, floor products, and specialty finishes can behave differently than wall paint. If the label recommends a nap size, follow it. If you are between two choices, smoother finishes usually prefer the shorter nap. Rougher surfaces usually need more nap to reach into texture.
Build a better cart
Add more than one cover if you are switching colors, using primer and paint, or working on a large room. A fresh cover is cheap compared with fighting lint, dried edges, or a tired roller halfway through the project.
