About Modern Masters Metallic Paint

  • Prime first. Modern Masters says to clean the surface, prime it with a primer from its recommended or compatible list, such as its Metallic Cool Tone or Warm Tone Primer or Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3, and let the primer dry, preferably overnight.
  • Satin Metallic Paint: opaque colors need about two coats and semi-opaque colors about three. One gallon covers about 208 to 320 sq ft, so a quart covers roughly 52 to 80 sq ft per coat.
  • Satin dries to the touch in about 30 minutes, can be recoated in about 30 minutes, handles in 1 hour and fully cures in 24 hours at 70°F to 80°F and 50% humidity. Apply between 58°F and 85°F.
  • Brush with a quality brush for water-based paint. To roll large walls, add up to 16 oz of Extender for Rolling per gallon for more wet-edge time, and back-roll in one direction. To spray, thin with up to 16 oz of water per gallon and use an HVLP or conventional cup gun, not an airless sprayer.
  • Satin colors can be intermixed for custom shades. Outdoors, the satin line needs Modern Masters MasterClear UV Protective Clear Topcoat.
  • Exterior Metallic Paint is a water-based acrylic polyurethane that resists water, mildew, stains and UV, so it needs no topcoat. Two coats, about 320 to 400 sq ft per gallon, recoat in 1 to 2 hours.
  • VOC is under 350 g/L for both lines. Clean up with soap and warm water.

FAQ

Do I need a primer under Modern Masters metallic paint?

Yes. Modern Masters says to prime the clean, dry surface with a primer from its recommended or compatible list, such as its Metallic Cool Tone or Warm Tone Primer or Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3, and let it dry, preferably overnight.

How many coats of metallic paint will I need?

It depends on the color. Modern Masters rates opaque colors at two coats and semi-opaque colors at three. Sheer colors are translucent overcoats meant to add luster over another color.

Can I use the satin metallic paint outside?

Only with a topcoat. Modern Masters says exterior use of the satin line requires MasterClear UV Protective Clear Topcoat. The Exterior Metallic Paint colors are made for outdoor surfaces and need no topcoat.

How do I avoid lap marks on a wall?

Add up to 16 oz of Extender for Rolling per gallon, work in sections about 4 feet wide while keeping a wet edge, and finish by back-rolling in one direction from ceiling to floor.
