About Minwax PolyShades Stain and Polyurethane
- Interior wood only. Minwax does not recommend PolyShades for floors.
- On raw wood, apply oil-based Minwax Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner first for more even color.
- Sand with 220 grit along the grain and remove the dust. Stir, don't shake or thin. Apply very thin coats along the grain with a natural-bristle or foam brush. Plan on 2 to 3 coats; each coat adds color.
- Recoat after 6 hours. Rub lightly with #000 steel wool between coats and remove the dust.
- Allow 24 hours after the final coat before light use. Clean up with mineral spirits.
- For extra protection over the color, Minwax suggests a clear coat of Fast-Drying Polyurethane or Wipe-On Poly (see polyurethane).

FAQ
Can PolyShades go over an existing finish?
Yes, over polyurethane. Minwax says PolyShades can be used over a polyurethane finish to change its color without stripping. The Minwax data sheet says to sand a previously finished surface with 220 grit along the grain for adhesion and remove the dust first.
How many coats of PolyShades do I need?
Usually 2 to 3. Each coat deepens the color, so stop when you reach the shade you want. Wait 6 hours between coats.
How do I get an even PolyShades finish?
Minwax calls for very thin coats brushed along the grain, with a light pass of #000 steel wool between coats. Test the color on a hidden spot first.
Can I use PolyShades on floors?
No. Minwax does not recommend PolyShades for floors. Use a floor-rated stain and finish instead.
