General Finishes Oil-Based Wood Stain

General Finishes Oil-Based Wood Stain is a thin, wipe-on liquid stain for raw interior wood: cabinets, trim, doors and furniture. General Finishes makes it from oils, resins and pigments to bring out the natural grain. We carry it in half pints (about 45 to 50 sq ft) and quarts (about 180 to 200 sq ft).

About General Finishes Oil-Based Wood Stain

  • Apply with a cotton rag, natural-bristle or foam brush, or staining pad, then wipe off the excess with the grain. Do not thin or spray.
  • Dry to the touch in 8+ hours; wait 24+ hours before a second coat.
  • Raw wood only: General Finishes does not recommend it over pre-finished wood or other surfaces.
  • Seal it with 3 coats of a General Finishes topcoat. Before a water-based topcoat, let the stain dry 72+ hours.
  • On pine, maple and other blotch-prone woods, General Finishes suggests Gel Stain, Water-Based Wood Stain, or a first coat of Pre-Stain Conditioner.
