Most of the work with Lake Brown happens before you open the can. Messmer's UV Plus is a penetrating oil and alkyd stain, so it needs clean, dry, open wood to soak into. This listing is one quart of the semi-transparent Lake Brown color.
Free shipping at $75, no code needed (lower 48 + DC). Unopened cans can be returned within 30 days with a prepaid label; opened paint can't (refund policy).
Prep, in Messmer's order
- Clean gray or dirty wood with Wood and Deck Cleaner Part A, then use Brightener Part B. Both are powder concentrates.
- Let the wood dry completely, at least 24 to 48 hours.
- Previously stained or treated wood should be weathered enough for full penetration.
- Let new redwood age at least 6 to 8 weeks, then clean and brighten it.
- Let new pressure treated lumber dry for several weeks before staining.
Then stain
Mix thoroughly. Apply when the surface is between 50 F and 90 F, not in direct sun on hot days, and with no rain expected for 48 hours. One coat is enough for most applications. Remove any stain the wood hasn't absorbed within 30 to 60 minutes, and allow 24 hours to dry in good conditions.
What to expect
- Semi-transparent color that lets the grain show
- Contains fungicides and UV absorbers, per Messmer's
- No wax or paraffin, so water soaks in rather than beading. Messmer's says the high solids fill the pores for lasting water repellency.
- Recoat by cleaning and/or brightening and reapplying. No stripping or sanding.
Coverage: Messmer's lists 100 to 150 sq ft per gallon on rough wood and 150 to 250 on smooth wood. That is roughly 25 to 62 sq ft from this quart. Use paint thinner for cleanup, and put soaked rags in a sealed, water-filled metal container. More deck stain and exterior wood finishes.
Questions
Can I apply it over an old stain? Messmer's says previously stained or treated wood should be weathered enough for the new coat to penetrate completely. Clean gray or dirty wood with its Wood and Deck Cleaner and Brightener first.
Why doesn't the finished wood bead water? Messmer's leaves out waxes and paraffin, which it says wear off fast and hurt paint adhesion later. It says the high solids fill the wood's pores instead, for lasting water repellency.
How soon can I stain new redwood? The data sheet says to let new redwood age at least 6 to 8 weeks, then clean and brighten it before applying.
