Messmer's Wood and Deck Cleaner (Part A) is a powder concentrate that removes dirt and gray from exterior wood decks, fences, log homes, and other exterior wood before you stain. It is the cleaning half of Messmer's two-part system, paired with Wood and Deck Brightener Part B.
Why clean first
If you stain over a dirty surface, the oils and resins in the stain trap the dirt and the wood turns dark and dingy. Cleaning first lets the finish penetrate and show the real color of the wood. Messmer's also does not recommend bleach for cleaning wood, because it breaks down the lignin that holds wood fibers together and leaves a washed-out look.

Specifications
- Type: powder concentrate (contains sodium percarbonate), mixed with water before use
- Size: 1 lb jar
- Coverage: up to 600 sq ft per jar. Tough jobs may need a second application or a stronger mix, which lowers coverage
- Mix ratio: about 1/3 cup of powder per gallon of hot water
- Apply with: garden sprayer, mop, or plastic bristle brush
- Cleanup: water
How to use
- Sweep dirt and debris off the wood.
- Dissolve about 1/3 cup of powder per gallon of hot water in a plastic bucket and use promptly.
- Apply with a garden sprayer or mop. After about five minutes, scrub with a stiff brush or push broom.
- After the cleaner has worked for about twenty minutes, rinse thoroughly with clean water.
- For redwood and some cedars, brighten with Part B right after rinsing. Allow at least 24 to 48 hours of dry time before staining.
Good to know
- Messmer's recommends cleaning your deck at least once a year, and twice a year is better
- Mix in plastic containers. Do not let the solution sit on unpainted aluminum or steel
- Harmful if swallowed. Keep out of reach of children and follow all label directions
