Messmer's UV Plus Natural, 1 Gallon (250 VOC)
Natural is the lightest shade in the UV Plus line, a lightly pigmented toner for when you want the deck, fence or siding to look like the wood itself rather than a stain color. Messmer's names Natural, Natural Cedar and Natural Redwood as the picks for the most visible grain. This gallon is the 250 VOC version, under 250 g/L as supplied.
Buy one can, no case minimum. Free shipping at $75, no code needed (lower 48 + DC). Unused, unopened items can be returned within 30 days of receiving them, and we send a prepaid return label; opened paint, aerosols and flammable liquids can't be returned. See our shipping policy and refund policy.
What the Natural tone does
Unlike a water-clear sealer, Natural is tinted with transparent iron oxide, so it absorbs UV and holds the wood's color longer while the grain stays in view. Fungicides and a mildewcide are built in. The oil and alkyd blend soaks in rather than building a film, so it does not peel or flake when applied correctly. Wood species, age and texture change the final look, so brush out a test patch first.

One coat does most jobs. Messmer's sells UV Plus in 1 gallon and 5 gallon containers; when you use several cans, mix them together (box them) so the tone stays even.
Before you start
- Clean gray or dirty wood with Wood and Deck Cleaner Part A, then let it dry 24-48 hours.
- Work when the surface is between 50 and 90 F and no rain is due for 48 hours.
- Wipe off anything still sitting on top after 30-60 minutes. Dries in about 24 hours in good conditions; clean tools with paint thinner.
- Oily rags can catch fire on their own. Seal them in a water-filled metal container right after use. Read the safety data sheet and technical data sheet.
Questions
Is Natural the same as a clear sealer? No. Messmer's says clears with no pigment give no UV protection or color retention. Natural carries a light load of transparent iron oxide pigment, which absorbs UV while letting the grain show.
Can Natural go on new pressure treated lumber? Yes, once the new lumber has dried for several weeks. Messmer's lists it as suitable for older CCA lumber and for the newer ACQ and copper azole treated lumber.
Why doesn't the finished wood bead water? Messmer's leaves out waxes and paraffin, which wear off fast and can block a later coat of paint. The high solids fill the wood's pores to repel water instead.
