Messmer's UV Plus for Hardwood Decks is an oil-based penetrating finish made for dense exotic hardwoods like Ipe, Mahogany, Teak, Tigerwood and Massaranduba. Transparent iron oxide pigments absorb UV for color retention, it contains fungicides for mildew resistance, and because it soaks in instead of forming a film it is not subject to peeling and flaking when properly applied. To maintain it, clean the wood and reapply, with no stripping or sanding. This is the 1 gallon, 250 VOC formula in Red Mahogany.

Buy one can, no case minimum. Free shipping at $75, no code needed (lower 48 + DC); some items are excluded at checkout. Unused, unopened items can be returned within 30 days of receiving them, and we send a prepaid return label; opened paint, aerosols and flammable liquids can't be returned. See our shipping policy and refund policy.

Red Mahogany is one of the two colors in the UV Plus for Hardwood Decks line, alongside Natural.

Why UV Plus for Hardwood Decks

  • Specially formulated for Ipe and other dense hardwoods
  • Transparent iron oxide pigments absorb UV radiation for color retention, which clear finishes with no pigment do not offer
  • Contains fungicides for mildew resistance
  • Penetrates instead of forming a surface film, so when properly applied it is not subject to peeling and flaking
  • Easy to maintain: clean the wood and reapply. No stripping or sanding needed
  • Works on decks, vertical surfaces, and trim. It can also be used on cedar, redwood, pine, and pressure treated lumber, though dissimilar woods will not look the same after finishing
  • Made in the USA

How much do I need?

One coat is enough for most applications. Using Messmer's coverage rates, a 300 sq ft smooth hardwood deck needs about 1 to 1.5 gallons.

How to apply

  1. Sweep the deck, clean it with Messmer's Wood and Deck Cleaner Part A, and rinse. Right after rinsing, use Wood and Deck Brightener Part B to brighten the wood and neutralize the pH. New wood should age at least 6 to 8 weeks and be cleaned first.
  2. Let the wood dry completely, at least 24 to 48 hours. Apply when surface temperatures are between 50 and 90 degrees F, out of hot direct sun, and with no rain expected for 48 hours.
  3. Stir or shake thoroughly so all pigment is mixed in. When using more than one can, intermix (box) them.
  4. Apply one coat with the grain. After about 30 minutes, brush out or wipe off any product puddled on the surface so no sticky, shiny spots remain.

How long it lasts

On hardwood decks, Messmer's expects 1 to 2 years between coats. Dense hardwoods take in less product than cedar or redwood, so they often need more frequent maintenance. Multiple coats will not make it shiny; a penetrating finish dries to a natural, matte look.

Safety

Rags, steel wool, or waste soaked with this product may spontaneously catch fire if improperly discarded. Immediately after each use, place them in a sealed, water-filled metal container. Read the full label before use.
