Getting a smooth brushed finish
- Wash off dirt, grease, oil and other contaminants with a commercial detergent, rinse with fresh water and let it dry. Remove loose paint and rust with a wire brush or sandpaper.
- Sand smooth, hard or glossy finishes to give the new paint something to grip. Rust-Oleum says the enamel is compatible with most coatings but suggests a test patch.
- Prime bare wood and metal with Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch Primer. Primers can be topcoated after 2-4 hours.
- Stir until settled pigment is mixed back in. Use a good quality synthetic brush and light, even strokes.
- Avoid excessive brushing, which Rust-Oleum says reduces film thickness and protection. Stay out of direct sunlight and off hot surfaces.
Questions
How long before I can handle it? At 70 F and 50% relative humidity, Rust-Oleum lists dry to touch in 30 minutes, dry to handle in 1 hour and fully dry in 2 to 4 hours. Allow more time when it is cooler.
Do I need a primer? Rust-Oleum says Painter's Touch Primer gives superior adhesion and hiding and is especially recommended for bare wood and metal. It lists 1980502 Flat Gray Primer among the recommended primers.
Should I thin it? Thinning is not required. In hot, dry conditions Rust-Oleum says you can thin with up to 2 oz of water per quart to extend dry time.
