How to apply
- Sand raw wood smooth. On a finished piece, clean, scuff sand and test adhesion in a hidden spot.
- Stir well.
- For hand application, lay on a liberal wet coat along the grain. Use smooth strokes without pressure or repeated back-brushing.
- Allow at least 2 hours at 70 °F and 50% humidity. Cool or humid conditions, thick coats and sealed surfaces need longer. Sand lightly only when the finish powders, then recoat. Apply 2 to 3 coats.
- For spraying, strain first and apply a 3 to 5 mil wet film. Check the tip with your equipment supplier; use the recommended NIOSH/MSHA-approved respirator and ventilation.
- Treat it gently during the 21-day cure under ideal conditions.
Good to know
- Do not apply over white or light paint: General Finishes warns of yellowing.
- Do not use over linseed oil or Danish oil.
- Over oil-based stain or finish, let it dry at least 72 hours first.
- Do not mix Dead Flat with the other sheens.
- Warning: may cause an allergic skin reaction. Wear gloves and read the safety data sheet.
Questions
What is the difference between dry time and cure time? Touch-dry and recoat are separate stages. The listed times assume 70 °F and 50% humidity; full cure takes about 21 days. Wait longer when drying conditions differ.
How much do I need? Multiply the area by the number of coats, then divide by the coverage for your can size. Allow for waste and absorbent wood.
Can I use it outdoors? No. It is made for interior surfaces.
Which sheen should I pick? Dead Flat and Flat have the least shine. Satin is in the middle; Semi-Gloss and Gloss are progressively shinier. Do not mix Dead Flat with another sheen.
