General Finishes Dye Stain Reducer, Pint
General Finishes Water-Based Dye Stain Reducer, Clear, Pint, is the colorless base used to make GF Dye Stain. Mix it with compatible GF water-based stain to lighten your custom color. The manufacturer lists about 60–80 sq ft per pint when applied, with actual coverage depending on the wood, mixing proportions and application.
Features
- Clear base for creating lighter GF water-based stain colors.
- Works with GF Dye Stain or Water-Based Wood Stain.
- Small measured additions make a trial mix easier to reproduce.
- Also reduces the viscosity of thicker water-based stains.
Best for
Customizing GF water-based stain for raw interior wood furniture, cabinetry, doors and trim. Reducer is clear mixing base, not a colored dye stain or protective finish. Test the complete preparation, stain and topcoat combination before committing to your project.

How to apply
- Choose GF Dye Stain or Water-Based Wood Stain and prepare a representative sample according to that stain’s raw-wood sanding and cleaning directions. Gather measured amounts rather than estimating by eye.
- Add Reducer in 10% increments, mix thoroughly and test until the color suits your project. Record the proportions. GF permits any percentage of its compatible stain and Reducer, but the test determines the result.
- Apply the mixed color using the chosen stain’s application directions. Test your full procedure through the topcoat, particularly when combining manufacturers. Keep oil-based stains and sealers out of the mix.
- Allow at least two hours between applied coats and before a GF water-based stain or topcoat, at about 70°F and 50% humidity. Wait at least 24 hours before GF oil-based products. Cool or humid conditions take longer; continue only when dry.
Good to know
Do not use water to lighten GF Dye Stain; Reducer contains ingredients that keep color molecules dispersed. For controlling stain penetration on raw wood, GF prefers its Water-Based Pre-Stain Conditioner. Do not use on an existing finish, outdoors, or with linseed or Danish oils. A mixed color still needs the appropriate protective topcoat. The exact Reducer SDS lists no signal word and no hazard statements. This does not remove handling precautions: keep away from children, close the container, wash after handling and read the can label and Reducer safety sheet. Follow local disposal rules.
