After staining, protect the surface with a clear topcoat from protective finishes and topcoats. For General Finishes oil-based gel, seal with 3 coats of topcoat: High Performance (water-based, dries clear) after 72+ hours dry, or an oil-based option such as Arm-R-Seal or Gel Topcoat. FAQ
Gel stain vs liquid wood stain?
Liquid wiping stains penetrate deeper into the grain. Gel stains sit thicker, build more uniform color, and are often chosen for vertical work or over existing finishes with proper prep. Follow each maker’s TDS for dry times and topcoat rules.
Do gel stains need a topcoat?
Yes for General Finishes oil-based Gel Stain; always seal with 3 coats of topcoat. Check Old Masters, Varathane, and Minwax labels for their own seal requirements.
Can I gel-stain cabinets without stripping?
Many gel stains are rated for use over existing finishes after cleaning and scuff sanding. Dry times are longer than on raw wood. Test a hidden area first and wait until the stain is non-tacky before topcoat.
How do I use gel stain on cabinets and furniture?
Follow General Finishes' steps in our guide, How to Use Gel Stain on Cabinets and Furniture Without Stripping. It covers prep, the wipe-on and dry-brush methods, dry times and the topcoat.
