Clear Weathering is the clear choice in the Messmer's UV Plus family, in a 250 VOC gallon. Before choosing a clear, know Messmer's general guidance: clears with no pigmentation do not offer UV protection or color retention. If you want the wood to hold its color, Messmer's suggests a transparent tinted tone matched to the species: Natural Cedar for cedar, Natural Redwood for redwood, Pine/Fir for pine or Douglas fir.

How UV Plus goes on

UV Plus is a solvent-borne blend of natural oils and alkyds that soaks into the wood instead of forming a film. Messmer's says that when properly applied it does not peel or flake, and that later recoats need only cleaning and reapplication, with no stripping or sanding.

Gallon coverage

Messmer's lists 100 to 150 sq ft per gallon on rough wood and 150 to 250 sq ft on smooth wood. A 6 ft by 50 ft run of smooth fence boards (300 sq ft of face) would take roughly 1.2 to 2 gallons in one coat.

No wax, by design

Many finishes add wax or paraffin to make water bead. Messmer's leaves them out, saying they wear off quickly and get in the way of paint adhesion if you repaint later.

Checklist

  • Pressure treated wood: OK once new lumber has dried for several weeks (CCA, ACQ and copper azole)
  • Apply at surface temperatures of 50 F to 90 F, never to wet wood, with 24 to 48 rain-free hours ahead
  • Do not thin. Mix well and box multiple cans.
  • Wipe off what hasn't soaked in after 30 to 60 minutes
  • 250 VOC series: under 250 g/L as supplied
  • Soaked rags can self-ignite. Store them in a sealed, water-filled metal container.

Compare tinted options in deck stain and exterior wood finishes.

Questions

Does a clear finish protect wood from UV? Messmer's says clears with no pigmentation do not offer UV protection or color retention. For that, it recommends a tinted transparent tone matched to the wood, such as Natural Cedar, Natural Redwood or Pine/Fir.

Can I paint over it later? Messmer's says it leaves out waxes and paraffin because they interfere with adhesion if you decide to paint over the stain later.

How do I maintain it? Messmer's says UV Plus is not a film, so there is no stripping or sanding. Clean and/or brighten the wood and reapply.
