Natural Cedar, one gallon
Shoppers sometimes mix this one up with the color simply named Natural, which Ready Seal used to call Light Oak. Natural Cedar is a separate shade in the eight-color range alongside Redwood, Mahogany, Pecan, Dark Walnut, Mission Brown and Burnt Hickory. Like all of them it is an oil-based, semi-transparent stain and sealer in one, made to penetrate exterior wood and leave the texture showing. Ready Seal has been in business since 1992.

What to expect after it goes on
- Water beads at first, then the finish shifts to dispersing it.
- The finish is flat and natural; too much stain can stay glossy or dry slowly.
- Color settles in over 7 to 10 days.
- Life expectancy: 1 to 3 years on horizontal surfaces, longer on vertical ones.
- There is no insecticide in the formula.
Redwood and cedar cleaning
For redwood, Ready Seal cites the California Redwood Association recipe: 1 cup TSP and 1 cup bleach in 1 gallon of water, followed by an oxalic acid brightener. Let the wood dry fully and check for 12% moisture or less before staining.
Protecting what's nearby
Wipe overspray with mineral spirits while it is wet. On concrete, Ready Seal suggests a cleaner such as Simple Green or Purple Power with an absorbent like Oil Dry. If stain reaches a swimming pool, the oil floats; Ready Seal suggests Scum Balls to soak it up. Mask or cover plants. The tech sheet calls the product toxic to fish and combustible, so keep it away from open flame and surface water, and store the pail in a sealed state between uses.
Coverage runs about 125 to 175 sq ft per gallon depending on wood and surface, per the tech sheet table. Apply with a brush, roller, pump-up sprayer or airless rig, mixing all cans of the color together first for uniform color. VOC is under 250 g/L.
Questions
Is Natural Cedar the same as Ready Seal Natural? No. They are two separate colors among Ready Seal's eight. Natural was formerly called Light Oak; Natural Cedar is its own shade.
Why does fresh stain bead water and then stop? Ready Seal says it beads water at first, then works to disperse water rather than bead it long term. That change is normal.
Can I use it indoors? Ready Seal is designed for exterior use only. If it ends up on interior wood, Ready Seal suggests wiping it down with mineral spirits and topcoating with a polyurethane.
