Burnt Hickory, one-gallon pail
Burnt Hickory is one of the eight pigmented colors in Ready Seal's oil-based exterior line, a semi-transparent stain and sealer blended from oil, resins and finely ground pigment that soaks into the wood rather than forming a skin. Grain and texture stay visible, and Ready Seal says it won't crack, chip, flake or peel. Because the pigment includes trans-oxides that absorb UV, a colored choice like Burnt Hickory gives sun protection the clear blend can't.

Laying it down
- Brush, roll or spray. No back-brushing is needed, and the stain goes on without laps, runs or streaks.
- Either one generous coat or two light ones at least 45 minutes apart. Over-applying slows drying or leaves a glossy patch on what should be a flat, natural finish.
- Don't thin it, don't tint it, and never mix it with a water-based product. Colors can be blended with each other; write down the ratio if you do.
- True color shows after 7 to 10 days.
Cleanup and the pail
The gallon has a plastic locking ring; Ready Seal says to pry it off with a large pair of pliers. Mask plants and hard surfaces first: light overspray can yellow foliage and heavy overspray can kill it. On concrete, Ready Seal suggests a degreaser such as Simple Green or Purple Power along with an oil absorbent. Rags wet with oil stain can self-ignite; keep them in a sealed, water-filled metal can. VOC is under 250 g/L. For exterior wood only.
Questions
How do I cover hard-water sprinkler marks? Ready Seal suggests three coats over the sprinkler-stained areas and two coats on the rest of the surface.
Does a pigmented color like Burnt Hickory protect against sun? Ready Seal says every one of its colors contains trans-oxide pigments that absorb UV, while clear finishes have no UV protection. That makes a pigmented color the better pick in full sun.
I got stain on a metal post. How do I get it off? Ready Seal says to wipe overspray with mineral spirits while it is still wet; on metal poles, clean it within 45 minutes. On a vehicle, use soap and water.
