Choosing a method
| Tool |
Messmer's guidance |
| Brush |
Keep a wet edge along the length of the board and don't stop in the middle of a board, to avoid lap marks. |
| Airless |
.015 in. to .019 in. tip, then back-brush or roll. |
| Garden sprayer |
Listed as an applicator. Back-brush or roll to prevent sags and runs. |
| Pad or roller |
Listed as applicators. |
Do not thin it. Mix until settled material is fully blended, and when using more than one can, box them together.
Avoid over-applying
UV Plus has to soak in completely to work. Wipe off anything still on the surface after 30 to 60 minutes. If areas dry shiny and tacky, Messmer's says to scrub them with lacquer thinner or MEK within 48 hours and wipe dry. Past that, the excess has to be stripped or sanded off.
Weather window
Messmer's recommends surface temperatures from 50 F to 90 F. Don't work on wood that is hot to the touch or wet, and wait for a forecast with no rain for 48 hours. On vertical surfaces, Messmer's expects UV Plus to last 2 to 3 years on smooth wood and 3 to 4 years on rough wood. On decks it expects 1 to 2 years.
A quart covers about 25 to 37 sq ft of rough wood or 37 to 62 sq ft of smooth wood, based on Messmer's per-gallon rates. Clean up with paint thinner. More deck stain and exterior wood finishes.
Questions
Can I spray it? Yes. Messmer's lists garden sprayers and airless sprayers, with a .015 in. to .019 in. airless tip. Back-brush or back-roll after spraying to prevent sags and runs, and cover nearby areas against overspray.
Some spots dried shiny and tacky. How do I fix them? Messmer's says this comes from over-applying. Within 48 hours, scrub the spots with lacquer thinner or MEK to soften the excess and wipe dry. After it cures further, stripping or sanding is needed.
Can I stain if rain is forecast tomorrow? Messmer's advises against it. UV Plus needs at least 24 to 48 hours to dry, and rain can push stain out of the pores and leave it blotchy.
