Oxford Brown is one of the brown shades in Messmer's UV Plus line, sold here by the quart. UV Plus is a penetrating finish made from a solvent-borne blend of natural oils and alkyds, for decks, log homes, siding, fencing and other exterior wood. A quart is a practical size for testing a color on your own boards or for small jobs like a gate, a planter or a bench.
Free shipping at $75, no code needed (lower 48 + DC). Unopened cans can be returned within 30 days with a prepaid label; opened paint can't (refund policy).
Quart math
| Surface |
Messmer's per gallon |
Per quart |
| Rough wood |
100-150 sq ft |
about 25-37 sq ft |
| Smooth wood |
150-250 sq ft |
about 37-62 sq ft |
One coat is enough for most applications. If you buy several cans, Messmer's says to mix them together (boxing) so the color stays even.
Why there is nothing to peel
UV Plus soaks into the wood and does not build a film when applied correctly. Messmer's says that means no peeling or flaking, and recoating takes no stripping or sanding: clean and/or brighten the wood, then apply more. The formula has no wax or paraffin. Messmer's says those additives wear off quickly and can interfere with paint adhesion later.
Application notes
- Stir until nothing is left on the bottom of the can.
- Apply to dry wood at surface temperatures of 50 F to 90 F (Messmer's FAQ), with no rain expected for 24 to 48 hours.
- Wipe off any stain that has not soaked in within 30 to 60 minutes so it does not leave a sheen.
- Allow 24 hours to dry in good conditions. Clean tools with paint thinner.
- Rags soaked with UV Plus can catch fire on their own. Put them in a sealed, water-filled metal container.
Messmer's sells UV Plus in 15 colors, from lightly pigmented naturals to semi-transparent shades. Wood texture and age change the final look, so brush out a sample first. More deck stain and exterior wood finishes.
Questions
How much will a quart cover? Messmer's rates UV Plus at 100 to 150 sq ft per gallon on rough wood and 150 to 250 on smooth wood. A quart is a quarter of that: about 25 to 37 sq ft rough or 37 to 62 sq ft smooth, in one coat.
Will it peel? Messmer's says UV Plus does not form a surface film when properly applied, so it is not subject to peeling and flaking.
How long does it last before recoating? Messmer's estimates 1 to 2 years on decks, 2 to 3 years on smooth vertical surfaces and 3 to 4 years on rough vertical surfaces, depending on sun, weather and exposure.
