UV Plus in Oak Brown, one quart

Messmer's UV Plus is an oil-based penetrating finish, a blend of linseed oils and alkyds, made in the USA and treated to resist mildew. It comes in 15 colors. Oak Brown is one of the semi-transparent shades with more pigment, which gives stronger color and more UV defense than the lighter Natural, Natural Cedar and Natural Redwood. A quart is the size to test the color on a few boards, finish a bench or planter, or touch up a section of a deck already done in Oak Brown.

Free shipping at $75, no code needed (lower 48 + DC). Unopened cans can be returned within 30 days with a prepaid label; opened paint can't (refund policy).

Application, Messmer's way

  1. Clean and brighten the wood with Messmer's WD Wood and Deck Renewer, then let it dry 24 to 48 hours. Give new pressure-treated lumber several weeks before staining; new redwood needs 6 to 8 weeks.
  2. Mix several cans together (boxing) so the color is uniform.
  3. Brush, roll or spray. When spraying airless, use a 0.015 to 0.019 in tip and back-brush or back-roll.
  4. Keep a wet edge and work the full length of each board so you don't stop mid-board.
  5. After 30 to 60 minutes, wipe up any stain that hasn't soaked in.

Messmer's warns that rags used with this oil finish can spontaneously combust, so dispose of them carefully. Clean brushes and spills with paint thinner.

Questions

How many coats of UV Plus do I apply? Messmer's directions call for one coat. Let it soak in, then remove whatever hasn't absorbed within 30 to 60 minutes so no film is left on top.

How hot is too hot to stain? Messmer's says to apply when the surface is between 45 and 90 F, and that if the surface is hot to the touch, it is too hot. Keep rain off for 24 to 48 hours afterward.

How long does UV Plus last before recoating? Messmer's guidance is about 1 to 2 years on decks, 2 to 3 years on smooth vertical surfaces and 3 to 4 years on rough vertical surfaces.
