General Finishes Oil-Based Penetrating Stain in Pecan, Half Pint, is a traditional pigmented liquid wiping stain for raw interior wood. It is made from oils, resins and pigments, goes on with a rag or brush and wipes off, and soaks into the wood instead of sitting on top. This half pint covers about 45-50 sq ft per coat. General Finishes notes the formula is PFAS-free.

How much do I need?
At 45-50 sq ft per coat, one half pint covers about 45-50 sq ft with one coat, or about 22-25 sq ft if you plan two coats. Absorbent or open-grain wood takes more stain.
How to apply
- Sand open-grain wood with 120 grit, then 150, then 180. Sand closed-grain wood no finer than 180 grit. Remove all dust.
- Stir thoroughly before and during use. Test the color and your full stain-and-topcoat process on scrap or a hidden spot first; wood species and the topcoat change the final color.
- Work one section at a time (top, side, drawer, door). Apply with smooth, even strokes, then wipe the excess off evenly with the grain. Rewet and wipe right away to fix lap marks.
- Let dry 24+ hours, longer in high humidity or with heavy coats. Seal with 3 coats of a General Finishes topcoat. Wait 72+ hours before a water-based topcoat over this oil stain.
Good to know
Penetrating stains are thinner than gel stains and more prone to blotching. On pine, maple and other hard-to-stain woods, General Finishes recommends its Gel Stain, or a first coat of Pre-Stain Conditioner. Rags soaked with oil-based stain can catch fire on their own: place them in a sealed, water-filled metal container and dispose of them under local fire rules. Store above 50 F and below 80 F; best used within 1 year.
