Self-Leveling Concrete Sealant

Self-leveling sealants for horizontal cracks and expansion joints in concrete driveways, garage floors, sidewalks, and decks. These pourable formulas fill the joint and level themselves, so you do not tool them the way you tool a vertical caulk. This page groups the self-leveling concrete sealants we list: Sikaflex Self-Leveling Sealant (10 oz gray; 29 oz is in draft), Loctite PL S20 / PL Self-Leveling Concrete (10 oz gray), and DAP AMP Self-Leveling Concrete Sealant (9 oz).

Pick by chemistry and cure window. Sikaflex and Loctite PL S20 are one-part polyurethane sealants built for traffic after full cure. DAP AMP is an advanced modified polymer (hybrid) that DAP rates for wet and damp concrete and for 1-hour paint and rain readiness on a thin bead. For vertical walls and foundations, use a non-sag sealant instead, such as Loctite PL S10 or Sikaflex Construction Sealant.

FAQ

What is a self-leveling sealant used for?

Horizontal cracks and expansion joints in concrete slabs. Sika lists driveways, garages, sidewalks, balconies, pavements, and similar slabs. Loctite lists driveways, garage floors, sidewalks, and concrete floors and decks. It pours into the joint and levels itself, so you do not tool it like vertical caulk.

Self-leveling or non-sag concrete sealant?

Use self-leveling on flat horizontal joints. Use non-sag (gun-grade) on vertical or sloped surfaces. Henkel pairs PL S20 (self-leveling) with PL S10 (non-sag) for that split. Sika pairs Sikaflex Self-Leveling with Sikaflex Construction Sealant for vertical and multi-material joints.

How long before I can paint or get rain on it?

It depends on the product. DAP AMP rates 1 hour paint and rain ready on a thin bead. Sikaflex Self-Leveling calls for about 1 week before painting or total water immersion. Loctite PL S20 is paintable after full cure, about 7 days per the Henkel sheet.

Do I need a backer rod?

For Loctite PL S20, Henkel calls for a backer rod in joints deeper than 3/8 in, with sealant depth about half the joint width (min 1/4 in, max 1/2 in). Deep joints without a backer rod can bubble. Follow each maker sheet for joint design.

Can I use it on wet concrete?

DAP AMP is rated for wet and damp surface application. Sika says Self-Leveling Sealant can go on green or new concrete 24 hours after the concrete has cured, and on wet concrete once the water source has been stopped for 1 hour and there is no standing water. Loctite warns that applying PL S20 too deep or on a substrate that is not absolutely dry can cause bubbling.

Is the 29 oz Sikaflex Self-Leveling listed?

The 10 oz gray cartridge is ACTIVE. The 29 oz size is still draft in the catalog, so the live pick right now is the 10 oz. Sika coverage tables rate about 12.1 linear ft of a 1/2 x 1/4 in joint per 10.1 oz cartridge and about 34.9 ft per 29 oz cartridge.

Will it handle driveway traffic?

After full cure, yes for the polyurethane lines. Loctite describes PL S20 as abrasion and tear resistant for pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Sika lists pavements, driveways, and garages. DAP AMP withstands foot and vehicle traffic after full cure per its TDS. Wait for full cure before heavy traffic.
