Zinsser Primers & Sealers

If you've ever dealt with water stains bleeding through fresh paint, smoke damage that won't quit, or a surface so slick nothing sticks to it — you already know why Zinsser exists. They've been making primers and sealers since 1849, and their stuff just works. No guessing, no second coats of primer hoping it holds. Pick the right Zinsser product for the job and move on to the fun part.

The Zinsser Primer Lineup — Which One Do You Need?

Zinsser makes a bunch of primers, but here's the honest breakdown of when to reach for each one:

  • B-I-N Shellac-Based Primer — The heavy hitter. Blocks smoke damage, pet odors, water stains, knots, tannin bleed, and just about anything else that ruins your paint job. It dries in 45 minutes and sticks to glossy surfaces without sanding. The trade-off? It's shellac-based, so cleanup is denatured alcohol and the smell is strong. Open a window. Worth it every time.
  • Bulls Eye 1-2-3 — The everyday workhorse. Water-based, low odor, sticks to pretty much anything (wood, drywall, masonry, glossy surfaces, even PVC). If you don't have a specific stain problem, this is the primer you want. Great for cabinets, trim, and whole-room repaints.
  • Cover Stain — Oil-based stain blocker. Think of it as the middle ground between BIN and Bulls Eye. Blocks stains, seals porous surfaces, and sands beautifully smooth. Professionals love it for new drywall and exterior wood.
  • Peel Stop — Got peeling or chalking paint? This flexible binding primer soaks into cracked and peeling surfaces and locks everything down so you can paint over it. Saves you from scraping down to bare wood on old houses and weathered exteriors.
  • Mold Killing Primer — Does what the name says. Kills existing mold and mildew on the surface and creates a mold-resistant film. Basements, bathrooms, and anywhere moisture is a problem.

When to Use What — Real Situations

  • Painting over smoke damage or odors: BIN Shellac. Nothing else comes close. One coat seals it.
  • Water stain on a ceiling: BIN Shellac or Cover Stain. Spray it on, let it dry, topcoat. Stain gone.
  • Kitchen cabinets: Bulls Eye 1-2-3 or BIN. Bulls Eye if they're already scuffed and prepped. BIN if they're glossy and you don't want to sand.
  • New drywall: Bulls Eye 1-2-3 for most jobs. Cover Stain if you want a super-smooth sand-and-seal finish.
  • Exterior wood with peeling paint: Peel Stop first, then prime with Bulls Eye 1-2-3 or Cover Stain.
  • Bathroom with mold spots: Mold Killing Primer, then topcoat with a quality bathroom paint.
  • Painting over dark colors: Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Plus (the high-hide version) gives you better coverage so you don't need four coats of white.

Quick Application Tips

  • BIN dries fast — work in sections and don't go back over areas that have started to tack up.
  • Bulls Eye 1-2-3 can be brushed, rolled, or sprayed. Thinning is not recommended.
  • Let any Zinsser primer dry fully before topcoating — rushing it leads to adhesion failures.
  • For best stain blocking, apply primer in a single thick coat rather than two thin ones.
  • Clean shellac-based products with denatured alcohol. Water-based products clean up with soap and water.
