Messmer's UV Plus Deck Stain Natural Redwood Transparent 250 VOC Gallon
Messmer's UV Plus Deck Stain Natural Redwood Transparent 250 VOC Gallon
Messmer's UV Plus is an oil-based penetrating wood finish for decks, log homes, wood siding, fencing, and other exterior wood. It soaks into the wood to protect it from water and sun while keeping a natural look. This 1 gallon can is the 250 VOC formula in Natural Redwood.
Natural Redwood is a transparent tone. Messmer's suggests matching the transparent finish to the wood, and Natural Redwood is its pick for redwood. New redwood should age at least 6 to 8 weeks and be cleaned and brightened before staining.
Why UV Plus
- Transparent iron oxide pigments absorb UV radiation while letting visible light through, so the grain still shows
- Contains fungicides and a mildewcide for mildew resistance
- Penetrates instead of forming a surface film, so when properly applied it is not subject to peeling and flaking
- Easy to maintain: clean and/or brighten the wood and reapply. No stripping or sanding needed
- High solids fill the pores of the wood for lasting water repellency, with no waxes or paraffin that can interfere with painting later
- Suited to cedar, pine, redwood, and pressure treated lumber (older CCA plus newer ACQ and copper azole) once new lumber has dried for several weeks
- Made in the USA

How much do I need?
One coat is enough for most applications. Using Messmer's coverage rates, a 300 sq ft smooth deck needs about 1.2 to 2 gallons, and the same area of rough-sawn wood needs about 2 to 3 gallons.
How to apply
- Clean gray or dirty wood with Messmer's Wood and Deck Cleaner Part A. On redwood and some cedars, follow with Wood and Deck Brightener Part B to remove dark tannin stains. Let the wood dry 24 to 48 hours.
- Apply when surface temperatures are between 50 and 90 degrees F. Avoid direct sun on hot days. If the wood is hot to the touch, it is too hot. Do not apply to wet wood or if rain is expected within 24 to 48 hours.
- Stir thoroughly so settled pigment is fully mixed in. When using more than one can, intermix (box) them.
- Apply one coat with the grain, keeping a wet edge along the length of the boards. Remove any product not absorbed within 30 to 60 minutes to prevent shiny, tacky spots.
How long it lasts
Messmer's expects 1 to 2 years on decks, 2 to 3 years on smooth vertical surfaces, and 3 to 4 years on rough vertical surfaces. Sun, weather, and direction of exposure all affect this.
Safety
Rags, steel wool, or waste soaked with UV Plus may spontaneously catch fire if improperly discarded. Immediately after each use, place them in a sealed, water-filled metal container. Read the full label before use.
