Penofin Red Label Stain, Transparent Chestnut, Gallon
Penofin Ultra Premium Red Label Stain in Transparent Chestnut, Gallon, is the selected 250-VOC penetrating oil finish for exterior wood. Plan about 175–300 sq ft from this gallon. Texture, absorption and application affect coverage; test color on your own wood.
Features
- Penetrating oil colors wood without building a surface film.
- Transparent tones leave the wood grain visible.
- Brush or stain-pad application suits hands-on projects.
- Clean-and-recoat maintenance refreshes weathered or worn areas.
Best for
Exterior bare wood: decks, fencing, siding, log homes and outdoor furniture. Remove a previous non-Penofin coating before application. Test color and absorption on the project wood. The selected transparent color contributes pigment while showing wood grain.

How to apply
- Start with clean, dry wood free of dirt and sawdust. The manufacturer recommends First Step Prep for new wood and mill glaze; use Pro-Tech Cleaner 2 on old bare wood and Brightener 3 for graying or discoloration. Follow each prep product and let wood dry. Remove previous non-Penofin finishes.
- Follow the exact can’s mixing directions; the Red Label data sheet calls for stirring before and during application. Work at 45–80°F, away from hot wood or direct hot sun. Apply with a brush, stain pad or plastic-tip pump sprayer.
- On softwood, wait 30 minutes, then wipe the entire surface with a lint-free cloth. On hardwood, brush/back-brush with little excess, wait 20–30 minutes, then wipe completely. Prevent any surface film. For hardwoods, keep application and the next 24 hours rain-free and maintain at least 45°F through the first 3–4 hours of drying.
- Use one initial 250-formula coat; do not apply wet-on-wet. The three-hour second-coat directions are for 550-VOC. Observe drying and cure times, allowing for conditions. Clean tools promptly with mineral spirits or paint thinner.
Good to know
DANGER: Flammable liquid and vapor. Skin allergy may occur; repeated exposure damages the central nervous system, and swallowing into airways can be fatal. Harmful to aquatic life; avoid release. Read the 250-formula SDS dated 02/15/2018 and label. Its California section lists titanium dioxide and ethylbenzene as cancer chemicals. Ventilate, avoid breathing vapors, wear specified gloves/clothing and eye/face protection, and avoid ignition sources. Immediately submerge oily rags, steel wool and waste in a sealed, water-filled metal container away from buildings and combustibles; dispose under local rules.
Questions
Why wipe away excess? This penetrating finish should leave no film; excess can remain sticky.
Can I apply over another brand? Remove the previous coating and follow the preparation guidance.
Will the chart match my wood? Species and application change the result; test on your project.
What do the can photos show? PSS supplies the first gallon packaging photograph; the manufacturer’s extra image shows a gallon family package. Neither displays the named color or 250-VOC mark; exact identity comes from the item fields.
