How to apply
- Clean a dry surface of wax, grease, glue and dirt. Sand bare wood smooth with 120- or 180-grit paper, repair defects and remove dust with a tack rag or mineral-spirits-dampened lint-free cloth. Follow lead-dust precautions before disturbing old paint.
- Stir before and during use. On bare wood, apply liberally with a brush, lint-free cloth or spray. Let penetrate 5–15 minutes, then wipe across the grain and finally with it. On fiberglass/composition, work one panel at a time and feather streaks while wet.
- For an existing finish, scuff with very fine sandpaper, remove dust, apply a thin uniform coat with foam or bristle brush and dry-brush along the grain. For painted glaze, use fully dry paint, let stain set 5–10 minutes, then dry-brush.
- Allow thorough drying, usually 12 hours or longer before recoating or topcoating; hardwood floors need 24 hours or longer. Ideal conditions are 70–75°F and 35–50% humidity. The February 2025 TDS directs complete drying plus an additional 24 hours before water-based finish. Test lacquer compatibility for stain; do not use lacquer over a glaze.
Good to know
DANGER: Flammable liquid and vapor; may cause allergic skin reaction, genetic defects, cancer and fertility or unborn-child harm; prolonged or repeated exposure damages organs; swallowing followed by entry into airways may be fatal. Read the exact manufacturer-code safety sheet, wear its specified protection, provide adequate ventilation, avoid breathing vapors and keep ignition sources away. Contaminated rags, steel wool and sanding waste can ignite spontaneously: immediately seal in a water-filled metal container and dispose under local fire rules. Use as packaged; do not thin.
