The 3M 909 Medium/Coarse Sanding Sponge is a flexible foam abrasive for small-area preparation. It measures 3-3/4 by 2-5/8 inches and is 1 inch thick. This medium/coarse version can be used wet or dry on wood, paint, metal, plastic and drywall, as the surface instructions allow.

Why DIYers choose it

  • Medium and coarse grades support different stages of surface preparation.
  • The flexible foam format suits small areas where a full sanding sheet may be awkward.
  • Wet or dry use gives you a choice that can be matched to the surface instructions.
  • Rinse and reuse the sponge after sanding.

Best for

Small preparation areas on wood, paint, metal, plastic and drywall. Choose the grade for the finish you need, then test an inconspicuous area. This is the medium/coarse model, rather than the fine/medium or extra-fine/fine versions.

How to apply

  1. Identify the surface and any existing coating. Follow its preparation and safety instructions, including whether wet sanding is suitable.
  2. Choose the grade for the preparation step and test a small, inconspicuous area before continuing.
  3. When sanding wood, work with the grain. Follow the surface and coating directions for other materials.
  4. Progress through finer abrasive grades as the required finish calls for them. This medium/coarse sponge does not replace a finer finishing abrasive when the next coating needs one.
  5. Check the prepared surface before the next finishing step. Rinse the sponge for reuse.

Good to know

Check the required finish before choosing an abrasive grade. A coarse preparation step and a fine finishing step serve different purposes. Wet-sanding capability does not make every surface suitable for water. Before sanding old paint, establish its hazards and required dust controls. Follow the surface and coating instructions through preparation, sanding and cleanup.

Questions shoppers ask

Is this the fine/medium version?

No. Model 909 is the medium/coarse version. Select another grade when the preparation instructions call for a finer abrasive.

Can I use it wet?

Yes, it is intended for wet or dry use. Confirm that wet sanding suits the surface and existing coating before adding water.

How do I clean it for another use?

Rinse the sponge after sanding. The rinse-and-reuse instruction is part of the product's care guidance.
