ZAR Interior Oil Base Stain in Champagne, Half Pint, adds translucent oil-based color to interior wood and suitable nonwood surfaces. Manufacturer coverage at a 1-mil film is about 200 sq ft from this half-pint can; application, texture and porosity affect yield. Test on your actual surface before committing to a color.

Features

  • Controlled penetration helps produce even color.
  • One stain coat can color a prepared surface.
  • A second dry-stage coat can deepen the tone.
  • Manufacturer directions include decorative glazing and nonwood applications.

Best for

Interior unfinished wood, fully dry painted surfaces, prefinished cabinets and manufacturer-directed fiberglass, metal or composite surfaces. Shellac and lacquer must be removed completely. Exterior use is limited to vertical surfaces protected with ZAR Exterior Poly; this is not a clear protective finish.

How to apply

  1. Remove dirt, wax and grease. Repair raw wood, sand 120–150 grit and remove dust. Let a mineral-spirits damp wipe dry. Do not sand painted surfaces; let their paint dry completely. Lightly sand prefinished cabinets with 320 grit. Do not sand bare embossed nonwood.
  2. Stir before and during use. On bare wood, apply evenly with a lint-free cloth or brush and wipe excess with the grain. On paint, wipe or dry-brush for the desired glaze. On cabinets, cloth-apply with grain and dry-brush corners or lap marks.
  3. For embossed nonwood, work stain into the grain with a circular cloth motion, then wipe with the grain and feather with a dry soft brush. Dry at least 48 hours, as for prefinished cabinets. Cool or humid conditions need longer.
  4. Apply compatible ZAR Water Base or Oil Base Poly for protection, following its label. Oil-based Poly over light stains can yellow without natural-light exposure. Clean tools with mineral spirits.

Questions

Can I lighten the result? Before stain dries, wipe with a mineral-spirits damp cloth; this is not a can-dilution recipe.

Can I blend colors? Two colors in this ZAR line can be mixed 50:50; test first.

Will the photo match my project? Wood, preparation and application affect color; test a sample on your surface.
