Penofin Blue Label Stain, Clear, Quart
Penofin Premium Blue Label Stain in Clear, Quart, is the selected 250-VOC penetrating oil finish for exterior wood. Plan about 44–75 sq ft from this quart; the quart figure is estimated proportionally from the manufacturer’s gallon range. Texture, absorption and application affect coverage; test color on your own wood.
Features
- Penetrating oil adds color without a surface film.
- Transparent tones keep the wood grain visible.
- Brush and stain-pad application suit hands-on projects.
- Cleaning and light maintenance coats refresh worn areas.
Best for
Exterior bare wood, including decks, fencing, siding, log homes and outdoor furniture. Remove previous non-Penofin coatings and test color and absorption first. Clear is minimally pigmented, has limited UV protection and allows wood to gray naturally.

How to apply
- Prepare clean, dry wood. The manufacturer recommends First Step Prep for new wood and mill glaze, Pro-Tech Cleaner Step 2 for old bare wood, and Brightener Step 3 for graying or discoloration. Remove previous non-Penofin finishes. Follow each preparation product and let the wood dry.
- Stir before and during application, following the Blue Label data sheet and exact can label. Work at 45–80°F on wood that is not hot to the touch. Protect adjacent surfaces. Apply with a brush, stain pad or plastic pump sprayer.
- Allow 20–30 minutes for penetration, then wipe the entire surface with a clean lint-free cloth to remove all excess. Leave no surface film, which can become tacky. Test the method and color on the project wood.
- Use one initial coat for this 250-VOC formula; do not apply wet-on-wet. The Blue Label four-hour second-coat recipe applies only to 550-VOC. Observe drying and cure times, allowing for conditions. Clean tools with mineral spirits or paint thinner.
Good to know
DANGER: Flammable liquid and vapor. May cause skin allergy; repeated exposure damages the central nervous system. Swallowing into airways can be fatal. Harmful to aquatic life; avoid release. Read the Blue Label 250-formula SDS dated 02/15/2018 and can label. Its California section lists titanium dioxide and ethylbenzene as cancer chemicals. Ventilate, avoid breathing vapors or spray, wear specified gloves, protective clothing and eye/face protection, and avoid ignition sources. Immediately place oily rags, steel wool and waste in a sealed, water-filled metal container away from buildings and combustibles; follow local disposal rules.
Questions
Why wipe away excess? This penetrating finish should leave no film; excess can remain sticky.
Can I apply over another brand? Remove the previous coating and follow the preparation guidance.
Will the chart match my wood? Species, texture and application affect appearance; test on your project.
What do the can photos show? The PSS-supplied quart and extra manufacturer gallon photos are generic packaging references; exact identity comes from the item fields. General UV claims pictured on the cans do not apply to Clear; the manufacturer specifies limited UV protection and natural graying.
