Modern Masters Metallic Paint: Transform Any Surface Into a Showpiece
There's regular paint, and then there's Modern Masters. If you've ever walked into a restaurant, hotel lobby, or high-end home and noticed walls that seem to glow — surfaces with real depth, shimmer, and dimension — you've probably seen Modern Masters metallic paint in action.
The difference? Real metal particles. Not plastic flakes, not glitter, not a marketing trick. Modern Masters formulates with actual metallic pigments that catch and reflect light the way real metal does. The result is a finish that photographs beautifully but looks even better in person.
The Metallic Paint Collection — 80+ Colors
The flagship line. Water-based, low-VOC, and available in colors that range from subtle shimmer to full-on statement.
Golds & Warm Metallics
- Olympic Gold — Rich, warm gold without the gaudy. Think upscale restaurant, not Vegas casino.
- Pale Gold — Subtle champagne shimmer. The most versatile gold — works as an accent wall in any room.
- Pharaoh's Gold — Deep, antique gold. Pairs beautifully with dark wood and leather.
- Copper — Warm, true copper. Stunning in kitchens with copper fixtures.
Silvers & Cool Metallics
- Silver — Clean, bright silver shimmer. Modern and industrial.
- Warm Silver — Silver with a hint of warmth. Reads less cold than pure silver — better for living spaces.
- Pewter — Muted, sophisticated silver-gray. The most popular cool metallic for accent walls.
- Platinum — Bright, white-silver. Dramatic in bathrooms and entryways.
Bronzes & Statement Colors
- Blackened Bronze — Dark, moody bronze. The accent wall color that interior designers can't stop specifying.
- Statuary Bronze — Medium bronze with green undertones. Classic and stately.
- Champagne — Soft, warm shimmer. The easiest metallic to live with — works in bedrooms, dining rooms, everywhere.
Metal Effects — Real Patina on Any Surface
This is where Modern Masters gets truly unique. Metal Effects isn't a faux finish — it's real oxidation chemistry on any paintable surface.
How it works:
- Apply the Metal Effects Primer (blocks tannins and creates adhesion)
- Apply the Metal Effects Base Coat (contains real iron, bronze, or copper particles)
- Apply the Patina Activating Solution
- Watch real oxidation develop over 1-24 hours
The results are genuinely indistinguishable from aged metal. You can create authentic-looking rust, green patina (like the Statue of Liberty), blue patina, or aged bronze — on wood, drywall, concrete, MDF, furniture, or any paintable surface.
Available Patina Kits
- Blue Patina — Copper base + blue-green oxidation. The most popular kit. Creates that iconic aged copper look.
- Green Patina — Copper base + green oxidation. Statue of Liberty vibes.
- Rust — Iron base + rust activator. Creates genuine iron oxide rust. Incredible on industrial accent walls, planters, and furniture.
- Iron — Iron base without heavy oxidation. Subtle, dark, industrial.
MasterClear Protective Topcoats
Regular polyurethane will dull metallic shimmer and can alter patina chemistry. MasterClear was formulated specifically to protect Modern Masters finishes without compromising the look. Available in Satin and Semi-Gloss.
Pro tip: Always use MasterClear over Metal Effects to stop the oxidation process at the look you want. Without it, patina will continue developing.
Project Ideas
- Accent wall: Blackened Bronze or Pewter metallic. One wall behind the bed or sofa. Instant upgrade.
- Furniture rescue: Metallic paint on a thrift store console table. Olympic Gold or Champagne + MasterClear Satin.
- Front door: Copper metallic or Statuary Bronze. Massive curb appeal.
- Fireplace surround: Metal Effects Rust on the mantel or surround. Raw, industrial drama.
- Planters: Metal Effects Blue Patina on terra cotta or concrete pots. The aged copper look for $15 instead of $150.
- Commercial: Restaurant walls, retail displays, office lobbies. Modern Masters is spec'd by commercial designers nationwide.
Application Tips
- Prime first on raw surfaces. Modern Masters Metallic Paint covers well, but primer gives you a uniform base to build on.
- Use a good roller. Modern Masters sells a dedicated metallic paint roller (we carry it) — the nap is designed to create even metallic distribution without roller marks.
- Cross-hatch technique: Roll in an X pattern, then smooth vertically. This distributes metallic particles evenly and prevents "striping."
- Two coats for full coverage. First coat may look streaky — that's normal. Second coat builds the full metallic depth.
- Brush for texture. Deliberately visible brush strokes create an artistic, hand-applied look on accent pieces. Experiment on cardboard first.
