Krylon Spray Paint
Krylon makes spray paint for people who actually want good results — not just a blast of color that drips and runs. Their Fusion All-in-One line bonds directly to plastic, wood, metal, glass, ceramic, and more without priming, and their specialty finishes open up effects you can't get from a brush. Krylon Product Lines
- Fusion All-in-One — The flagship. Paint and primer in one can, bonds to difficult surfaces like plastic and laminate without sanding or priming. Available in dozens of colors and multiple sheens (gloss, satin, matte, metallic). This is the one to reach for first.
- COLORmaxx — Excellent coverage and color accuracy with a smooth finish. Great for general-purpose projects on wood, metal, and wicker. Dries in 10 minutes or less.
- Chalky Finish — Gives furniture and decor that soft, ultra-matte chalk paint look without the hassle of brush-on chalk paint. Smooth, even coverage. Pairs well with Krylon Clear Chalky Finish for protection.
- Sea Glass Finish — Translucent frosted coating that turns clear glass into sea-glass-style decor. Unique finish you can't get any other way. Hugely popular for vases, jars, and bottles.
- Metallic Finishes — Real metallic sheen in gold, silver, copper, brass, and more. Use for picture frames, light fixtures, hardware, and accent pieces.
- Looking Glass Paint — Turns clear glass into a mirror. Spray the back of glass panels or picture frame glass for an antique mirror effect. Cool for DIY decor projects.
- Rust Protector — For metal that lives outdoors. Prevents rust on fences, gates, patio furniture, and metal fixtures.
Spray Paint vs. Brush — When to Choose Spray
Not everything should be sprayed, and not everything should be brushed. Here's how to decide:
- Choose spray for: Wicker furniture, intricate shapes, railings, hardware, picture frames, metal patio furniture, quick color changes, plastic items, small accent pieces.
- Choose brush for: Large flat surfaces (tables, dressers, walls), anything bigger than a chair, projects where you need thick mil build-up, or when you're working indoors without great ventilation.
- The sweet spot: A lot of furniture flippers spray the detailed parts (legs, spindles, trim) and brush the flat panels. Best of both worlds.
Getting Great Results With Spray Paint
- Shake the can for a full minute after the mixing ball starts rattling. Most spray paint problems come from not shaking enough. The pigment settles to the bottom — if you don't mix it, you get weak color and clogged nozzles.
- Spray in light coats. Two or three thin passes beat one thick pass every time. Thick coats drip, run, and take forever to dry. Thin coats dry in minutes and build up smooth.
- Keep the can 10-12 inches from the surface. Too close and you get puddles. Too far and you get a rough, sandy texture from the paint drying before it lands.
- Overlap your passes by 50%. Each stroke should cover half of the previous one. This prevents striping and gives you even color.
- Temperature matters. Spray between 50-85 degrees F. Cold paint doesn't atomize well. Hot sun makes it dry too fast and creates texture.
- Clear the nozzle when you're done. Turn the can upside down and spray for 2-3 seconds until only clear gas comes out. This keeps the nozzle from clogging for next time.
Coverage Guide
- Standard 12 oz can: Covers about 25 sq ft (enough for 2-3 chair-sized pieces)
- Light colors over dark surfaces: Plan on 3-4 coats for full coverage
- Dark colors over light surfaces: Usually 2 coats does it
- Specialty finishes (metallic, chalk): 2-3 light coats for best effect
- Recoat window: Most Krylon products can be recoated within 1 hour or after 48 hours. Check the can — that middle window exists because the paint is partially cured and a new coat won't bond well.
